CLUGSTONE

I have been looking for the history of my great-grandfather, his name was John Herbert Clugstone born in 1896 in Castletown maybe Rushen. His mother was Jane Clugstone and his father is unknown. He was brought up by his grandfather John Clugstone in Rushen. He had two sisters Jessie [born 4/11/1887 in Rushen] and Lucy May [born 31/3/1891 in Rushen]. John Clugstone the grandfather, had two daughters, who we believed lived in the same house, Annie and Emma.

On the 1901 census John [grandfather] was aged 63, we have found something that says he was married but we cannot find anything on her after that and she was not on this particular census which makes us think she died. It states Annie was 23 and was a dressmaker and Emma was 18, it does not say what she did. We believe Jessie died before this census.

My great-grandfather was adopted by another family by 1901. It appears that soon after this happened John and his family moved to South Quay, Douglas. John Herbert’s Mother did not move with them, she disappeared and we have not been able to find anything out about her. We think she may have had more children, their fathers were also unknown.

Thanks Alexandra
