Re: Thomas Gelling
In Response To: Re: Thomas Gelling ()

Eric, as we know these darned GELLING'S are a law unto themselves!

I was recently given this information re TG and EW with the foundry story thrown in but I was not convinced that this was the TG I am now looking for. The info re the foundry is as it was given to me:

"Thomas Gelling married Elizabeth Willson (Wilson), he died in 1860 and his creditors demanded payment. But the widow went to court and demanded time to run the shop and pay back the debt. The judge agreed and she carried on the business. When we went to the Isle of Man in 1997, the library showed me accounts for the Gelling foundry which existed until the early 1960s. Therefore there is every possibility that the ironmongers remained in the same location"

I think the abovementioned people either asked for info on the incorrect TG or were given incorrect info by someone in the library trying to be helpful but showed them the wrong TG.

You are correct Eric, the TG b.1799, I am interested in was the s/o John Gelling and Isabel Cavendish and the Gelling's we have had many a discussion about for sometime now.

According to the IGI there is a TG who married a Elizabeth HAMPTON 24 APR 1834 Lonan, Isle Of Man. In the 1841 census there is a Thomas Gelling aged 15 with parents called Thomas and Elizabeth, with several siblings and in the following two censuses there is a Thomas and wife, Elizabeth with several children, and a Margaret Cottier aged 7, g/daughter. In the 1851c there is a ten year gap in ages (error?) and in the 1861c only two year gap so not sure if they are the same family but the children's names are more or less the same in each census.
I can't find a suitable Thomas Gelling and Elizabeth Gelling in the 1871 census unless they died between the two censuses of course.

So the confusion continues.......
