Re: Walkington, John Franklin
In Response To: Re: Walkington, John Franklin ()

Well, as you asked... Thought there wld be too much...
Walkingtons in the Isle of Man

James Two references in ‘A Manx Notebook’:-
§ a drummer (1699 – 1710)
§ drummer at (Castle) Rushen 1700 Paid £1.5.0 per quarter (i.e. £5 p.a.)

Presumably this is the person buried 30 Aug 1710, Malew

1. William ch. 4 Nov 1701, Malew. Details of parents only give ‘Walkington’ ! It seems most likely that he is a son of James above. There are two girls buried in the early 18th Century who are daughters of James and a woman who is presumably his wife :-

2. Sarah buried 11 Jun 1714, Malew ‘d/o James’ in Parish Register
3. Jane buried 14 Jun 1714, Malew ‘d/o James’ in Parish Register
Alice (nee Babington), buried 11 Nov 1748

4. Edward ch 10 Feb 1708 Malew. ‘Father = James’, presumably the James above, especially given Edward’s job. No details of mother. Was he christened as a young man, rather than as a baby? His date of Burial, 10 May 1776, Malew, states he was ‘aged 86’ and therefore would have been born in 1690. But, as we know, estimates of ages were often wrong.
§ Was a drummer 1719 – 1765 (ref. in ‘A Manx Notebook’)

§ 1720 Paid £5 per annum

§ 1740 Paid £5 per annum

§ Married Margaret FARGHER 4 May1723, Malew. She was buried 23 March 1765, Malew. Likeliest christening: 20 Mar 1693, Malew, d/o John.

§ 11 Oct 1755 He took an oath (signed with a X), along with a group of other soldiers, making a promise to search for smuggled goods. (ref. in ‘A Manx Notebook’)

§ 1757 He is noted on a list of house-holders in Castletown:- Edward, a drummer with Margaret, with one (un-named) daughter. Also nearby, was James, their son, a Fisherman, and Mary Walkington. (ref. in ‘A Manx Notebook’)

Children:- 1. Margaret ch. 5 Jul 1723, Malew Buried 20 Dec 1746 or later? No marriage details on the I. of Man.

2. James ch. 12 Dec 1729, Malew (see his details below)

2. Margaret ch. 29 Oct 1758 Malew

Likely burial for James - 1 Jul 1807, Malew. Mary was buried 29 Mar 1790, Malew

*There is a marriage for James W. and Jane CAINE 23 Aug 1801, Malew. Is this a third marriage? A son, James is ch. 6 Jan 1802, Malew. Do they emigrate, or does he after 1827? No other Burial date for a James in Manx Lawsons or Par. Reg except for the one above. There is a possible burial for Jane in 23 Ap 1827, Malew

5. Mary ch. 7 Sep 1766 Malew.

6. Patience ch. 3 Jun 1770 Malew. Buried 6 May 1776 Malew.

7. Thomas ch. 9 May 1773 Malew No record of death in the I. of Man. In Liverpool, a Thomas W. married Ann WRIGHT (date?) and their children, according to the IGI, were:-
James b. 23 Sep 1804, ch. 31 Oct 1804 St. Nicholas, L’pool
Mary, b. 7 Mar 1809, ch. 12 Jul 1809 St. Nicholas, L’pool
Henry, ch. 12 May 1816, St. Nicholas, L’pool

Given these names, I think this is our Thomas! Also, another Henry occurs in a later generation.

8. John ch. 25 Feb 1776 Malew
? m Margt. RELLY/KELLY? 23 Ap 1822 Malew. Likely christening: 5 Ap 1761, Malew, d/o Thomas Kelley and Isabel Brew. This is a late marriage, so no children poss.

John was in the 62nd Foot Reg’t (Manx Notebook) 1804 –1820
Buried 3 Feb 1851, Malew, aged 79; Margaret, 12 Mar 1845, Malew, aged 82

Notice the names Thomas, John, Mary and Isabella which appear later.
