The problem with the Clegg spelling of the surname is that there were lots of Cleggs in Lancashire, most of them from the cotton mill towns. Some of the Cleggs in Liverpool were Clagues from the Isle of Man who decided to change to the English spelling, or their descendants. They're so much harder to trace with the anglicised version.

Your NZ stray, Peter, sounds intriguing. I'm interested in finding out more about him. I have Clagues / Cleggs on both my grandfather's and grandmother's sides of the family.
