usually referred to as 'dagger' by printers and in use from 18th century or earlier to indicate death (presume from cross and association with grave marker).
My 1804 copy of "Printers' Grammar" suggests that an actual Cross (usually Maltese-like) is used in Roman Missals etc to indicate parts of prayers and that dagger was used as above in genealogy for death
