Re: Where is Lochemanor?
In Response To: Re: Where is Lochemanor? ()

Sorry John if I slandered you by mentioning New Jersey! I've usually found Google.com a good place of last resort.

So, how about Phil Kelly's Enmyn Ynnyd, Placenames, which is an excellent book.

He lists a LOUGHAN NY MAYNAGH in Michael parish. The name means MONK'S LAKELET, or, according to Juan Kelly's Manx Dictionary, the word MAYNAGH can mean, -

(1) A monk , or (2) Monkish, belonging to an abbey or any religious house.

So this could mean "the little lake belonging to the Abbey Lands" ??

He gives an example in BALLEY-VAYNAGH, meaning Abbot's land.

The word MAYNAGH could sound like "Manor" if the gutteral GH sound was softened.

Perhaps KNEEN'S Placenames might list this name and give a locality.

There must be many experts on the parish of Michael checking out this board. Perhaps some may recognise this place.
