Re: Meyrick Family
In Response To: Re: Meyrick Family ()

The following is an extract from my notes on the Bank's family of Balnahowe, or Howstrake, Onchan, Isle of Man. The names Meyrich and Merrick crop up in this. However, these appear to be from the north of England, i.e., Winstanley near Bolton and possibly Yorkshire. The extract, from Goodwins Genealogical Notes, reads -

That about the year 1792, William Bankes the last male Branch of the (Winstanley) family in England being extinct, his [i.e. John Banks'] father James Bankes (of Howstrake) was urged to go to England and prosecute his claim to the Winstanley Estate, there being an enquiry made for a male heir or next of kin, which he neglected to do.

That in consequence, William Hume as next of Kin (in his absence) married to one of the female Bankes, made claim to and obtained possession of the said Estate of Winstanley, on which occasion he took upon himself the name of Bankes.

That the present possessor, Meyrich Bankes is son of that William Hume Bankes.

John Bankes wants to know the tenure of the Winstanley Estate (whether Entailed on the heirs Male or the heirs General) at the time William Hume took possession, and upon what grounds and conditions he obtained possession, whether by giving a Bond of Indemnity, or Collateral security.

A female Bankes married a Bishop Merrick (Yorkshire ?) date uncertain.
