Govr Smith to Robt Farrant, High Bailiff Peel, 25 May 1781

Castle Rushen 25th May 1781

Sir

In consequence of your Complaint communicated to me through Mr Adjutant Bowyer, of John Callow chief Constable & Leonora the Wife of Angus Munn having impeded & obstructed the quartering & accommodating the Troops ordered to your Town for its protection & Benefit, by dissuading the inhabitants from giving such Accomodation and by insolent Behaviour to you in the Execution & Discharge of this Duty - you are hereby Required forthwith to call the sd John Callow & the sd Angus Munn & Leonora his Wife before you in Court Room of Peel, & there to inform the sd John Callow, that for his sd improper Conduct, it is my Order, he be therewith dismissed from serving His Majesty as Constable in future, & he is hereby dismissed from his sd Office accordingly. And you will also inform the sd Angus Munn or in his Absence, the sd Leonora his wife, that for her said misbehaviour & offence, it is my Order that he the said Angus Munn & Leonora his Wife, do not henceforth presume to sell or retail, or to permit or suffer to be sold or retailed, in their House by any Person or Persons whomsoever, any Beer, Wine or spiritous Liquor under any Pretence whatsover as he she or they offending here in shall answer the contrary at their Peril - And you will take due Care and see that this my Order be carried into due & effectual Execution without Fraud Collusion or Evasion

Angus Munn, 1730-1792, or one of his family is noted as holding a licence to sell alcohol from at least 1764 through to 1776, is absent from the 1781 list then a gap until 1800 when his son or daughter-in-law held a licence for next 25 years
