Hartmann's were the driving force behind the divided back postcard which allowed the whole of one face to be used for the image. They issued their first cards in 1902.
Early cards generally have a white band below the picture, at the left margin is a number of the form xxx.nn where xxxx is assumed to be the series number and nn the sequence number. Later cards placed the number running vertically on the left hand side of the image.
