Born 1852; parents Patrick Sutherland, schoolmaster born in Scotland and Catherine M. Sutherland born Lezayre. In 1881 census shown as Bank Accountant living at 12 Finch Road with parents and brother Alfred.. Acording to one of dedications in Douglas and Other Poems [1885] there was another brother John Frederick born 7 May 1851 who died 14 Sept 1879.
