Methodist Sunday School returns from 1851 Religious Census, 30 March 1851

Actual Returns

These returns are extracted from the copy held in the Manx Museum - the author of these documents (all in the same hand) copied all returns both from the Established Church (Anglican) and non-Establishment churches/chapels onto manuscript summary tables.

The census questions asked for considerable deatils re status of scholars - in vast majority of cases just the number on the roll and the number of teachers were given.

As for the Chapel returns the names are those used in the returns - in a few cases this may be different than that used subsequently in these cases the modern name is shown (thus).

The questions were:
(5): Number of scholars on Roll (m & f to be shown separately)
(6): Number of scholars on Roll receiving tuition on 30 Mar 1851
(7): Number of scholars on Roll receiving books who pay for them
(8): Number of scholars on Roll who provide own books
(9): Number of scholars on Roll who also attend some other day school
(10): Number of scholars on Roll who also formerly attended some other day school
(11):Number of teachers paid (none in any Methodist S/S) and unpaid - again split m & f
Question 7 always left blank, Q8 answered only by Smeale (noted in comments) and are thus not included in the table, most make some attempt is made to answer questions 9 and 10. If only a total is given indicated '=n', if any entry blank '-' used.
The answers to question 11 would appear to be all teachers/leaders on roll - I assume that, as in a few chapels reported elsewhere, these teachers came in on a rota system e.g. one Sunday in 4 or 5.

Other questions related to fees paid by scholars (in all Methodist S/S no such fees were required), estimated annual cost of running the S/S and how income, other than fees, obtained (a.c. = annual collection; p.c. = public collection)

The date related to the start of the Sunday School - not that of the chapel

The returns were organised by Parish - Methodist chapels are organised in Circuits which do not take account of the parishes of the Established Church, however these are indicated for easier comparison with other returns and for ease in finding the original return. Standard abbreviations are used (First and last letter for parishes; ca, do, pe, ra for Castletown, Douglas, Peel and Ramsey).
The chapel returns are sorted alphabetically on their usual name as in the Attendance returns
