[Fom Manx Soc vol 29]

ANDREAS.

The parish church, dedicated to St. Andrew, was consecrated 1st November 1821.

The living, a rectory, is in the gift of the Crown. Value . £707 0 0 The glebe, 39 ac. 1 ro. 12 poles. Rateable value 100 19 0

Total value £807 19 0 A good rectory-house and garden.

The clerk of the parish has four acres of glebe.

The register begins in 1666. At the commencement it is stated : " The old church registry is much defaced, torn, and abused, which was made by Sir John Huddlestone, curate, of Kirk Andreas, under the Rev. Jonathan Fletcher, archdeacon of this Isle, and chaplain to the Earl of Derby; which is transcribed and writ in this new registry, as far as the names could be read and understood (beginning in 1666, after the restoration of the royal family, six years), by me, Charles Wattleworth."

The marble font once belonged to Philip 1. of France. At the French Revolution it was purchased by a Manx gentleman, and presented to his native parish.

By an Act of Tynwald, 6th March 1800, the old church being ruinous, a new one was ordered to be rebuilt near the south side of the present churchyard, and part of the glebe.-Mill's Statutes, pp. 402-405.

John Cecil Hall, the rector, having spent a considerable sum in the repair of the rectory house, by an Act of Tynwald, 20th December 1840, was enabled to mortgage the glebe lands to the extent of £700, to pay the annual interest of the same, and one-thirtieth part of the principal money borrowed annually, to be a charge on the living.-Gell's Statutes, pp. 60-66.

The churchyard was enlarged in 1847 by a free gift of a portion of the glebe.

In 1868 considerable repairs were made in the refitting and improvement of the parish church, and the building of a tower, by funds raised on an assessment of £3 per quarter land, various contributions, but chiefly by the liberality of Archdeacon Moore.

A new font was presented by Mrs. Cecil Hall of Douglas.
