To all.— William, by the divine mercy, the humble minister of St. Andrews, health. Whereas We, in Our visitation made at Arbroath, in the monastery of the same place, on Saturday the vigil of the apostles Saints Philip and James, and continued on the following clays, A.D. 1328,-have found that the Regular, Lord Bernard, by the grace of God Abbot of the aforesaid monastery, elected to the Sodor church, has led a good, praiseworthy, and upright life, and has conducted for seventeen years the government of the said monastery with prudence and circum-spection ; therefore, in consideration of the merits of the abbot himself, and of the request made by our most excellent and sovereign Lord, the King of Scotland, we have deemed it right, with the consent and assent of the whole community, that provision should be made for the same Lord Abbot, both for the expenses attending his election, and for his requirements in case lie should be promoted to the said Sodor church, and obtain peaceful possession of the said church, as follows That the above mentioned Lord Abbot, in return for his long labour and for the expenses which he incurred in relieving and repairing the said monastery, shall have and hold from the proceeds of the office of the royal chancery, and from other sources, under the name of provision, all the teinds of the church of Abernethy, along with the chapel of Dron, in the diocese of Dunblane, from Easter 1328, for the space of seven years.
