A Manx poet, writing about this time, remarks— " Douglas, the
seat of scandal,
Sours her own cup, and blasts the joys of life."
Whatever might have led to this characteristic of Douglas at that day, it is pleasant to know that at present it is distinguished for its " urbanity."
