[From Manx Soc vol IV,VII & IX]

RESUMPTION OF THE ISLE OF MAN BY EDWARD I. A.D. 1307.

RESPECTING THE RESUMPTION OF THE ISLAND OF MAN INTO THE KING's HANDS.

THE King, to the sheriff of Northumberland, Greeting. Since upon the inspection of rolls and other memoranda, which we have caused to be searched before our council, and diligently examined, it appears to us that many of our ancestors, formerly Kings of England, were seized of the land of Man as of right, and that we have, in like manner, been seized of the same (the issues and profits to be gathered from the same) until we, of our special favour, caused seisin of that land, such, namely, as Alexander, formerly King of Scotland, held of the same to be delivered to John de Balliol, lately King of Scotland, (saving always our own right and that of our heirs.) We command you to make known to the venerable father Anthony [de Bec], bishop of Durham, (who, as it is said, at present holds the aforesaid land,) by two free and lawful men of your bailliwick, that he may appear before us, upon the day of St. Michael, or within fifteen days, wheresoever, etc. To show if there be any reason why we cannot resume the said land into our hands as our right. And you may retain the names of those persons by whom the aforesaid bishop is informed, together with this writ. Witness the King at Caldecote, the 28th day of June.

By council.
