HENRY III. PROTECTS THE ISLE OF MANN DURING OLAVE'S ABSENCE IN NORWAY. A.D. 1236.

OF PROTECTION FOR OLAVE, KING OF MANN, ABOUT TO GO TO THE PARTS OF NORWAY.

 

THE King, to all his bailiffs and faithful subjects, who may inspect these present letters, greeting. Know that we have taken under our protection and defence, the people, lands, goods, rents, and all the possessions of our beloved and faithful Olave, King of Mann and the Islands, who is about to set out, upon his own affairs, to the parts of Norway, at the command of the King of Norway. Therefore we command you to maintain, protect, and defend the people, lands, goods, rents, and all the possessions of the said King of Mann and the Islands. Committing nothing against him, etc. And if any offence should be committed, etc. Witness the King at Merewell, the twentyfourth day of May.

REX omnibus ballivis et fidelibus suis, præsentes litteras inspecturis, salutem. Sciatis nos suscepisse in protectionem et defensionem nostram homines, terras, res, redditus, et omnes possessiones dilecti et fideles nostri Olavi Regis Manniæ et Insularum, qui pro negotiis suis, ad partes Norwegiæ de mandato Regis Norwegiæ profecturus est.

Et ideo vobis mandamus quod homines, terras, res, redditus, et omfres possessiones ipsius regis Manniæ et Insularum, manuteneatis, protegatis, et defendatis. Nullum ei inde inferentes, etc. Et si quid ei inde fuerit forisfactum, etc. Teste Rege, apud Merewell, vicesimo quarto die Maii.
