POPE HONORIUS TO REGINALD. A.D. 1223

HONORIUS, ETC., TO ILLUSTRIOUS KING OF MAN.

ANNO VII. EPIST. 164.

THE disposition of ready faith and earnest devotion, which thou studiest in a laudable manner to exhibit towards the Roman church, worthily deserves, that, embracing thy person with sincere benevolence, we should further thee with the special favor of the Apostolic See, favorably assenting to thy supplications. For as thy letters transmitted to us, declare, that desiring to be a participator in the blessings which belong to the Roman church, at the exhortation of our venerable brother, P [andulph,*] Bishop of Norwich, then elect,'and Legate of the Apostolic See, thou hast freely given, and irrevocably delivered to the Roman Church, and to us, the Island of Man, which belonged to thee by hereditary right, free of all service, receiving the said Island in fee from the Roman church, and making oath of fealty and bomage to us for the same. As the acknowledgment also of the dominion of the Roman church, then and tby heirs shall annually pay twelve marks sterling, in England, to the monastery of Furnes on the Feast of the Purification of the blessed Virgin. We therefore esteeming these things stable and pleasing, being inclined towards thy supplications, have received thee and thy land, with all things which thou, at this present, possessed, or in future mayest, by upright means, with God's assistance, obtain, under the protection of the blessed Peter, and of us, and have strengthened it with the defence of this present writing, that none may infringe this our protection. But if any one, etc. Given at the Lateran on the 10th of the Kalends of June,+ the seventh year of our Pontificate.
