Document No. 147.

1694 TO 1709. THE DUTIES LEVIED FOR SEVENTEEN YEARS IN THE TIMES OF THE DERBYS.

An account of Dutys levied in 1709 and some preceding years.
Dated Castle Rushen 4 Aug. 1709, and signed by J. Rowe, Thos. Sodor & Man, Chris. Parker and William Sedden. [To Earl of Derby.]

May it please your Lordship : In our general Metter to your Lordship's letter and the Commissioners we found ourselves obliged to observe that yr Lordships port Ingates and Outgates would be considerably lessened . . . . had they have arisen to these three years . . . . the truth is the scarcity of Trade . . . . Laws allowing the importation and exportation of tobacco - several strangers for two years past have landed considerable quantities thereof here in order to dispose of it elsewhere, this hath been the great thing complained of, and the only thing that hath raised yr Lordship's duties to the height they now are as yr Lordship may perceive by an Abstract out of the Custom Books for fifteen years past hereunder written.

The Customs of our own product without that of foreign commodities (will?) be (but?) small. but we have good reason to believe that they (may?) be much augmented if the favours we have desired be granted, but not to amount to what they now are without a greater perfection of Trade than we can hope for in any reasonable time from the poverty and circumstances of the country. All which we hold ourselves obliged in duty to lay before yr Lordship, and withall to assure yr. Lordship that if there be anything in the papers now sent, disagreeable to y' Lordship's or the public interest, we shall upon intimation make such amendments as may be thought reasonable and in the meantime we subscribe ourselves yr Lordship's most obedient servants.

J. Rowe Chris Parker
Tho. Sodor & Man Wm. Sedden.
