High Bailiff Moore's synopsis of returns to 1868 Questionnaire re Poor Relief

These are High Bailiff Robert Moore's synopsis of returns made to him from the questionnaire — split into 3 sub-tables for convenience - they accompany his remarks on pauperism. He states in a covering letter that the returns from the Primitive Methodist chapels, coming under a Ramsey-based Superindent, were sent to the High Bailiff of Ramsey. The list of names are given elsewhere.

There were a few additional remarks by individual responsees not noted by Robert Moore

Rev J. L. Stowell : Street Begging - Every Saturday a number of poor persons go round the town begging from door to door, - and besides this there are numerous casual cases ofbeggong, - the approximate amount collected by street beggars has been calculated as from 35/- to 40/- per week.

Rev J. F Garde (Kk Patrick) - Almost all the working men at Foxdale & Dalby belong to a Benefit Society, from which they derive pecuniary aid, & medical attendance in illness & aid when they are past work.

Rev J Edmund (Cronk-y-voddy) - I do not know of any residing in this neighbourhood who are "entirely dependent on charity for support" understanding the word "Charity" as "Public Charity" inasmuch as there is no common fund the application whereof would be a test. I know several families whose lot in life seems a very hard one who either from widowhood, imbecility of mind or body, or both, or from illegitimacy, are deserving of compassion ; whose claims for aid in the struggle of life I cannot ignore. From my position in the highway between the north & south of the Island I have been compelled to know that there is a large number of persons whose trade is medicancy; some whose infimities of mind or body ought to insure them a better condition - many, who ought to be compelled to a different manner of life. They are not-resident here, but passers through.
