WW1 Internees - John + Jacob Lahmers

Mona's Herald 19 May 1915 reported:

On Friday [14 May] a number of alien origin were arrested in Douglas and sent off by motor car to Knockaloe. They included Jacob Lahmers, who is well known for his cornet-playing abilities displayed on the Promenenade and the streets of Douglas. He has a son fighting in the Rifle Brigade, who was wounded last week. His brother, John, who for many years acted as a messenger for a Douglas tradesman, was also arrested, along with several others who have resided in Douglas for a considerable time. It is expected that several of them will be released almost immediately.

The Camp letter book has under date 20.5.1915 John Lahmers + Jacob Lahmers released and may reside in the Island - in a list of resident aliens dated 31 Dec 1917 - Jacob + wife Mary were at 9 Grafton St, Douglas and John at 8 Back Strand St Douglas

John Lahmers, aged 34, together with Douglas born wife Margaret als Fitzsimmons and 5 Manx born children may be found in the 1881 census as a German born general labourer residing in a shared dwelling at 47 North John Street Douglas - as he would be 65 in 1915 it is difficult to understand why he would be arrested.

Two other resident aliens noted on 31st Dec 1917 were Gabriel Denen at 29 Castle Street Douglas and August Moore at Town Hall, Port St. Mary.

Carl Fredrick Luft + wife Edith appear on list from March 1919 though Edith had appeared on earlier lists but with no mention of her husband - in 1919 at 14 St George's St Douglas and later at 61 Circular Road, Douglas - it would appear that his son Private Charles F Luft, Kings Liverpool Regiment with family address 14 St George's St Douglas was killed in action on 27 Sept 1918. Carl is buried age 58 on 13 Sep 1929 with Edith age 57 in 1931. Carl, proprietor of the Castle Arms, Castletown was still at liberty in March 1915 noted as being a Past Master of the Lodge of Mona (Freemasons, Castletown) at the funeral of Thomas Clague.
