WW1 Internee - Fritz Millar or Miller

One of the several who died during internment - all had inquests some of which were reported in the local press. The following is that carried by the Peel City Guardian of 6.1.1915.

Fritz Millar (37 years), a German who had been detained at the Douglas Aliens Camp, died on Tuesday [5.1.1915] at Noble's Isle of Man Hospital. The deceased was a native of Konigsberg, and was at the outbreak of war employed as a barber in London. An inquiry as to the cause of death was held on Wednesday, when the medical evidence showed that the deceased died from an ulcerated stomach. A verdict in accordance with the medical evidence was returned.

He was noted as internee number 2264 at Douglas Camp under the name Fritz Miller and was in the list of the first group of 100 to be transferred to Knockaloe on the Monday 4th January 1915 - however Col Madoc notes in his camp diary under 6th January that he was taken to hospital seriously ill - he died there as noted above and was buried in Douglas Borough Cemetery 13.1.1915 as Fritz Millar. His remains, like those of all other internees, other than Jews or Moslems, buried on the Island, were exhumed in the 1970s and removed to Cannock Chase.
