AP_X68(3rd)_19
8.8.1823
Duke to H.Hobhouse. Having received the letter from Capt. Gawne he finds it "to contain a gross perversion of the truth", He never dismissed him from the command of the Yeomanry, but merely informed him of the fact that the King had no further need of his services - meaning, as was obvious under the circumstances,as Deemster. His assertion that he was dismissed from his post as Deemster without trial or hearing is equally untrue. Mr.Peel had all the evidence etc. and his dismissal was fully deserved,as corrupt practices had been clearly proved against him, The Yeomanry Cavalry "fled before a mob of fishermen at Peel" in Oct.1821. In the fifteen months from then to date during which the writer has been in the Island he has called them out twice - at the Tynwald in July 1822 and at the execution of Camaish and Kinrade in April 1823. Until he received Capt.Gawne's letter he was not aware that the troop was continuing to receive an allowance from Government. If he had been he would have reported them as not worth a farthing of Public money, and he now recommends their immediate reduction.
