[From Manx Antiquities,1863]

The Views which illustrate the present little volume, were taken during a Photographic Tour of the Isle of Man, in 1862, and have been selected from a large series, intended to perpetuate the condition of the Runic and other Monuments of the Island, as they were met with in that year.

It was originally proposed, to use the Photographs themselves for the purposes of illustration ; but their uncertain permanence, even when prepared with the greatest care, suggested the trial of some other means of reproduction. Photo-Lithography, or the placing of the photograph on the lithographic stone, and printing it in permanent ink, has been adopted ; with what success the accompanying illustrations will show.

The original photographs have been put on stone by Mr C. COLLIE, Lithographer, whose enthusiasm in this department. of art, promises to it much advancement.

32 CHARLOTTE STREET, LEITH, July 1863.
