[from Douglas Directory, 1892]

RAMSEY.

RAMSEY, the second town in the Island in population and wealth, and frequently styled the Capital of the North, is beautifully situated along the embouchure of the Sulby River, at the foot of the northern mountains, which form a magnificent background to every view of the town. Its population in 1891 was 4,803; and it is rapidly growing in every element of material prosperity.

Ramsey is divided by the river and the harbour into two parts-North Ramsey and South Ramsey, the two being united by a substantial stone bridge crossing the river at the point where it enters the harbour. A second bridge, which will cross the harbour near the Market Place, is now in course of construction, and when completed, it will greatly facilitate intercourse between the two parts of the town, and largely assist the development of North Ramsey. The latter division of the town now includes the large tract of common land lying between the harbour, the high sandy cliffs, and the sea. known as the Mooragh, which was purchased by the town in 1881, from the Commissioners of Woods and Forests. This extensive tract of land has been laid out partly as building sites, and partly as a public park, and contains an ornamental sheet of water which proves very attractive to visitors.

The town is also spreading rapidly backward toward the mountains. and, to keep pace with the growth of its popularity as a pleasant and agreeable watering place, new houses of the most modern character are springing up in all directions. Ramsey possesses a marine promenade, extending along the shore from the Queen's Pier to the Harbour, while on the north side of the harbour a new promenade has been formed, thus affording visitors an uninterrupted marine promenade of nearly two miles in extent. The Queen's Pier also forms a pleasant promenade, being 2,200 feet long, and from it as well as from the Promenade, magnificent views of the sea and of the neighbouring mountains are obtained. The number of passengers landed, &c., will be found under heading "Isle of Man,"
