Oh ! What is man, and what man’s earthly stage ?
And what life’s measure for the child or sage ?
Full like sweet blossom fair in morning light,
Cut down and withered ore the shades of night.

Ah I well we know there are who nothing hold,
Not time nor mind, so dear as worthless gold;
Forgetful that their earthly life must end;
Forgetful whither carnal longings tend.

Christ’s Gospel shows the faithful’s highest meed
Is Faith—in measure as a mustard seed.
These fond, frail fools, who strive but earthly strife,
Care naught to struggle for eternal life.

Each morning rising thankless from their beds,
They think not of the God who guards their heads;
Tempted, endangered, yet all unaware
How near the fall—how close the earthly snare.

Never on betided knees to God they raise,
Hyianiug His lovely name, the voice of praise ;
No thanks ascend for health, no thanks for love
Which guards and shields the sinner from above.

How oft again we hear the well-worn tide
Of men who weaken not, nor slowly fail,
But waking from an earthly slumber, know
Another world—no more this world below?

Men to their work go forth, who novel- more
Shall lift the latch to pass the cottage door.
Death snrnmons man full oft with sudden voice
To leave the joys and labours of his choice.

Not hoary ago alone doth hear his call
On faithful ears the dreadful tidings fall.
The Herald speaks—tn hear is to obey—
And to OUI native dust to pass away.

~ then on worldly goods would SCi the heart
Which from all worldly things at last must
part P
i: cannot—if the whole wide world I gain—
Another day of earthly life obtain.

War takes its toll ; the sea its tribute claims ;
Falls with the house the household ‘midst the flames ~
But we, Preserved from ill, no lesson icara—
Nor to our weal the woes of others turn.

The sudden halt in others’ lives should teach
More careful walk to us.
The road to reach
Destruction’s goal is wide, and broad. and fair
