BEQUESTS TO THE POOR.

 

Extract from the Will of Mrs. Alice Gawne, of Ballagawne, A. D. 1749.

"I bequeath to my Sister Deborah, ten pounds, and ten pounds more to be applied towards the teaching of a School in the parish.

 

Extract from the Will of Thomas Gawne, of Ballagawne, Gent., A.D. 1777.

" I bequeath towards the instruction of poor people's children, ten shillings by the year, to be paid to the Minister and Wardens on every Easter Monday, out of the Tithes, to that end and purpose."

" I bequeath to a Schoolmistress in the parish ten shillings by the year, to be paid after the manner above mentioned, and she to teach two poor people's children gratis;"

There being no Schoolmistress in the parish for many years, this last mentioned legacy was not paid during that time. The arrears, amounting to £11 Manks, were afterwards recovered by the Vicar and Wardens and placed out at interest, as appears by Bond and Mortgage from Richard Finley, dated lath November' 1808, interest I s. Id. per pound per annum.

 

Extract from the Will of Wm. Clucas, Port St. Mary, A. D. 1797.

'` For the poor children of the parish I leave five pounds to be put upon interest, to be taken care of by the Vicar and Wardens of the said parish, and the interest accruing to he paid a qualified Schoolmaster, for teaching and instructing some poor children,

 

Extract from the Will of John Cain, of Port Eyron, A. D. 1803.

" I leave and bequeath the sum of eight pounds, currency, to be deposited in the hands of the Vicar and Wardens, to be laid out upon interest, the said interest to be yearly and every year paid to a Schoolmaster in the said parish, for teaching poor children."

His widow, now Mrs. RONEY, Executrix, pays the interest to the Schoolmaster.

 

Extract from the Will of Miss Jane Qualtrough, of Kentraugh, A. D. 1810.

" I leave and .bequeath to the Vicar and Wardens of the parish of Rushen for the time being, the sum of one hundred pounds British, to be by them laid out at interest on approved land security, and the interest thereof to be annually paid to the Mistress of the School already founded by me in the said parish.'' " I leave and bequeath to the said Vicar and Wardens the like sum of one hundred pounds British, to be laid out by them at interest on approved land security, and the interest thereof to be annually distributed to and amongst the poor of the said parish."

The said Legacies left by Miss Qualtrough have been placed out at interest, on the lands of the Driney and Kew, in Kk German, as appears by Bond and Mortgage from William Morrison, to the Vicar and Wardens, dated 19 Feby., 1810, bearing interest at the rate of 6 p. cent.

 

Extract from the Will of Esther Clague, Wife of the Rev. John Clague, Vicar, A.D. 1813.

" I leave and bequeath to the Vicar and Wardens of the said parish of llushen the sum of twenty pounds Manks, to be by them laid out at interest on approved land security, and the interest thereof to be annually distributed to and amongst the poor of the said parish: and I leave and bequeath to my grand-niece Esther Jane Coulthard, the one half, which is all my right to the purchased lands situate in Surby, called and known by the name of the Grampions, with half the houses thereon erected, she paying yearly and every year out of the said lands three pounds British to a Schoolmaster, for keeping a public Sunday School in the parish of Rushen, which Master the Vicar and Wardens of the said parish is to appoint."

The said legacy of £20 for the poor, with some interest in respect thereof amounting to the sum of twenty-one pounds British, is placed out at interest, as appears by a Promissory Note from the Rev. John Nelson and John Clucas, dated 1824: interest 6 p. cent.

 

Extract from the Will of the Rev. John Clarke, Vicar.

" Secondly, to Norris Clague's son I leave and bequeath half of the Grampion Hills, namely to John Clague, with half of the Houses built on John Crebbin's estate, and purchased by me John Clague,-he the said John Clague paying yearly and every year three pounds Manks to a Schoolmaster, for teaching the youth of the parish of Rushen their catechism, and other necessary branches of erudition, as shall be deemed right to the Captain, Vicar, and Wardens of the said parish: the above youth to be instructed every Sabbath day from eight to ten o'clock in the forenoon, and from three in the afternoon till five, or two hours in the morning, and two hours in the afternoon, for which the Schoolmaster is to have three pounds Manks out of the said land."

" Thirdly, I leave and bequeath to the poor of the parish the sum of twenty pounds Manks, to be laid out at interest by the Vicar and Wardens of the said parish, and the said interest to be levied and paid yearly amongst the poor."

This Bequest to the poor, with some interest due thereon, has been added to the £20 bequeathed by John Stevenson for the use of the Vicar, (see next extract) and lent to John OWcas and John Nelson, who have passed their Promissory Note to the Vicar and Wardens for £43 16s. 0d dated 29 Decr. 1818: interest 6 per cent.

 

Extract from the Will of John Stevenson, Sen., of Castletown, Gent. A.D. 1756.

" I leave and bequeath to the Parson or Vicar of Kirk Christ Rushen, and his successors for ever, the interest of £20 Manx, which said sum

Of twenty pounds is to be well secured for the use aforesaid by the Vicars General of the said Isle, and the Wardens of the said parish, and their successors for ever."

"I leave and bequeath unto the poor of Rushen, and the poor of Castletown, the interest of forty-three pounds Manes, equally to be divided, that is to say, ane-half to Kirk Christ poor, and the other half to the poor of Castletown, which said sum of forty-three pounds is to be well secured by the Vicar and Wardens of Kirk Christ, and the Vicar and Wardens of Malew, and their successors for ever, and I desire that the said interest may be distributed amongst the said poor yearly on the festival of St. Thomas the Apostle, and the principal to be paid within a year after my decease.''

"I leave and bequeath twelve pounds Manks to the School to be erected by the Trustees of Mr. Philip Moore, Senr.'s Will, and to be on the same foundation when the said School is erected, then to be paid and not before."

The above sum of £10 is now placed at interest at the rate of 6 per cent annum as appears by a Promissory Note from Samuel Keggeen, Thomas Gawne, and Henry Kelly, for £35 British, dated 16 Decr 1818.

 

Extract from the Will of Mr. John Nelson, A. D. 1796.

"To the poor of Kirk Chlist Rushen I leave three pounds British, to be secured by the Vicar and Wardens, and the interest to be divided amongst the poor objects yearly."

 

Extract from the Will of Edward Qualtrough, A. D. 1799.

" To the poor of the parish I leave the sum of eight pounds British, to be put into possession of the Vicar and Wardens, and to be laid out upon interest, and the said interest to be paid yearly."

These two last mentioned Legacies, with Alice Gawne's Legacy of £10 for a School, and Mr. Clucas's Legacy of £5 for the same purpose, amounting, with interest, to £28 Manks, have been laid out at interest on certain lands in Saureby, in the parish of Rushen, as appears by Bond and Mortgage, from Michael Crebbin to the Vicar and Wardens, dated 18 April, 1821: interest 6 p. cent

Extract from the Will of Katherine Qualtrough, A.D. 1742.

"I give and bequeath for ever, as an additional subsistence for the Vicar or Curate of the parish of Trinity Rushen for the time being, the sum of fifteen pounds, which sum I have secured by a Mortgage from William Mylchreest, on a new-erected Corn Mill, situate in the parish of Malew, as by the said Deed of Mortgage doth appear, humbly praying that the Right Rev. the Lord Bishop and his Vicars General for the time being, may be graciously pleased to see and give order that the yearly interest of this, my poor benefaction to the Vicarage may be duly applied from time to time, as the same shall become due, to the particular use of the Vicar or Curate of that parish for the time being."

This Mill is a ruin, and produces nothing.
