Archdeacon Wills 1776 #69, Arbory, of Catharine Radcliffe als Clague of Arbory, died March 1776:

‘This is affirmed to be the last will and testament of Catherine Rattcliff alias Clague of the parish of KK Arbory who departed this life in or about the month of March 1776, being of sound disposing mind and perfect memory at the making thereof. First, she committed her soul to Almighty god and body to Christian burial. Item, she left and bequeathed unto her son Richard Rattcliff all her right or part of her houses, hardens and lands (excepting the last parcel of land that her husband James Rattcliffe purchased from Mr William Corrin of xxx: [this part has been crossed out]) Item, she left on her aforesaid son Richard to pay unto her four daughters namely Catherine, Elianor, Margery, and Jean Rattcliff in lieu or consideration of the above legacy the sum of twenty pounds apiece. Item, she left unto her daughter Elizabeth Quain alias Rattcliff half a guinea. She left unto her two daughters Elianor & Margery aforesaid twenty shillings apiece to be paid by her executor hereafter mentioned and all her part of the worsted yarn in the house equally between them. Item, she left unto her daughter Jean aforesaid all her wearing apparel and also her part of the brewing pans but in case her husband would consent to give the whole pans to the said Jean after his death that he was to have the benefit of the whole pan during his natural life and otherwise. Item, she left unto her daughter Margrett Bell alias Rattcliff sixpence legacy. Lastly she nominated and appointed her loving husband James Rattcliff whole and sole executor of all the rest of her goods moveable and immoveable whatsoever. Witnesses: John Clague, Richard Corrin.

At a Chapter Court holden at Castletown November 6th, 1776, the executor is sworn in Court in form of Law and hath given pledges for the payment of debts and legacies, vizt. John Clague & Richard Corrin the witnesses. He also consents that his part of the pan shall descend after his decease to his daughter Jane as fully expressed in the will.

Know all men by these presents that I Charles Clague of the parish of Kirk Arbory do acknowledge to have received and to be fully paid the sum of twenty pounds currency of this Isle, from the hands of Richard Radcliffe of said parish, being the amount of a legacy bequeathed by the will of Catharine Radcliffe deceased to Jane my wife and directed by the said will to be paid by the said Richard Radcliffe. And I the said Charles Clague do hereby exonerate and requit the said Richard Radcliffe, his executors, and assigns from the payment of said sum forever and from every other sum or sums of money of what kind soever which I may or could claim by virtue of the said will. As witness my hand this the 26th February 1807. [signed] Charles Clague.

I John Key of Douglas do hereby acknowledge to have received from the hands of Richard Radcliff son of James Radcliff of KK Arbory the full amount of the legacy which was left my wife Elinor Key als Radcliffe by the aforesaid James Radclif and his wife this 21st February 1807. [signed] John Key.

Know all men by these presents that I William Watterson do hereby own and acknowledge to have received and to be fully paid and satisfied the sum of twenty pounds currency from the hands of richard Radcliffe of Kirk Christ Rushen, being the amount of a legacy bequeathed by the last will of Catharine Radcliffe deceased to Margery my wife and directed by the said will to be paid by the said Richard Radcliffe. And I the said William Watterson do hereby exonerate and acquit the said Richard Radcliffe, his executors and assigns from the payment of the said sum forever and from every other sum or sums of money or property of what kind soever which I may or could claim under and by virtue of the said will. As witness my subscription this 21 day of February 1807. [signed] William Watterson.

Know all men by these presents that I Richard Harrison of the parish of KK Christ Rushen do acknowledge to have received and to be fully paid the sum of twenty pounds currency of this Isle, from the hands of Richard Radcliffe of the parish of Arbory, being the amount of a legacy bequeathed by the last will of Catharine Radcliffe deceased, to Catharine my wife and directed by the said will to be paid by the said Richard Radcliffe. And I the said Richard Harrison do hereby exonerate and acquit the said Richard Radcliffe, his executors and assigns from the payment of said sum forever, and from every other sum or sums of money of what kind soever, which I may or could claim by virtue of the said will. At witness my mark to my name this 7th March 1807. [signed his mark] Richard Harrison.’
