Archdeacon Wills 1757 #25, Maughold, of Jane Christian als Tear of Ramsey:

‘In the name of God, Amen. I Jane Christian als Teare of Ramsey, being weak in body but of good and sound mind and memory, for which I praise God, do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following. First, I commend my soul to God, hoping through the merits of my blessed Redeemer that he will accept it, and my body to be decently buried at the discretion of my executor hereafter named. Secondly, I leave and bequeath to my son Cavaleiro Christian the sum of forty pounds. Thirdly, I bequeath to my son John Christian the sum of forty pounds. Fourthly, I bequeath to my daughter Jane Christian the sum of forty pounds. Fifthly, I bequeath to each of my brothers & sisters one shilling legacy. Sixthly and lastly, I nominate, constitute and appoint my dear & loving husband Edward Christian my whole and sole executor and residuary legatee of all the rest of my goods, whether house, houses, & garden with their appurtenances, moneys, bills, lands, debts, dues or demands, and whatever else is mine of what kind, nature & quality soever and if it should be the pleasure of God, that all my said children die minors and intestate, in that case I will and bequeath the whole of the respective legacies left and devised to them, to my said affectionate husband and executor. In testimony of all which I have hereunto set my mark to my name this 28th day of December in the year of our Lord 1756. [signed her mark] Jane Christian. Witnesses: Thomas W. J. Woods, Hugh Black.

At Ramsey January 31st, 1757, Hugh Black one of the witnesses to the above will, being now in a weak and infirm state of health, upon the petition of Captn Edward Christian executor bearing date January 29th, 1757, I have administered the oath in that behalf of the said witness, who has proved the will in form of Law.

At a Court of Correction holden at Lezayre February 28, 1757, the Revd Thomas Woods the other witness to the forgoing will has proved the same in for of Law, whereupon Capt Edward Christian is sworn executor in Court in for of Law, and by consent of Thomas Tear brother of the testatrix who is sworn supervisor of the children under age in form of Law, the said children and their goods are committed to the tuition of their father said Capt Edward Christian who has given pledges for payment of debts and legacies, namely Revd. Mr. Woods Vicar of Maughold and Thomas Tear the supervisor.

To the Revd Mr. Matthias Curghey Vicar General, the Petition of Edward Christian of Ramsey: humbly representing that the 1st of this instant it pleased God that his wife departed this life, and declared and executed the same as her last testament in the presence of the Vicar of KK Maughold and Hugh Black of Ramsey, who were desired to attest the said instrument. But the latter of the witnesses being at present in a dangerous and ill state of health, and should he die before the said will could be legally proved in a full Court, the petitioner apprehends it might be of the worst consequence to him by pxxxing[?placing] his affairs in confusion and hurting his circumstances, he therefore begs your Reverence please to come and take the evidence of said Hugh Black at his dwelling house in said town, in order to prevent such troubles and litigations as may otherwise ensue, and he as in duty bound will pray &c.

At Lezayre January 29th, 1757, on consideration of the above petition, the Petitioner is to give the next of kindred to Jane his deceased wife notice to attend the Monday next betwixt the hours of two and three in the afternoon at the house of Hugh Black, to be by and present when the oath is to be administered said Hugh Black as witness to the last will of said deceased.’
