Episcopal Wills 1742 Rushen #2, of Thomas Elston

In the name of God amen the 4th day of February in the 15th year of the reign of our sovereign Lord George the Second by the grace of God king of Great Britain and Ireland defender of the faith and in the year of our Lord God 1741. I Thomas Elston now in the Castle of Lancaster being indisposed at present but of sound mind and memory praised be to God for the same do hereby make, ordain, and declare this only to be my last will and testament on manner and form following (that is to say) I recommend my body to the earth from whence it was taken, to be buried in a decent and Christian burial by my executrix hereafter named and as for my worldly goods and temporal estate I give and dispose of them as follows:

 

First it is my will and mind and I give and bequeath unto my two cousins and nieces daughters of my brother William Elston deceased out of my personal estate so soon as it shall be collected in the sum of ten pounds apiece.

 

I further give and bequeath unto Isabella Waterson, my trusty servant all the rest, residue and remainder of my effects of what kind soever either in England or in the Isle of Man and I do further nominate and appoint the aforesaid Isabella Waterson my sole executrix of all this my last will and testament she paying all my just debts, legacies above specified and funeral expenses and I do revoke all other wills whatsoever. …

 

Witnessed by James Kenyon, John Sharp & Edward Styth

 

John Sharp of the town of Lancaster in the county of Lancaster plumber and glazier voluntarily maketh oath that he this deponent was present in Lancaster Castle on or about the 4th day of February last past when Thomas Elston then a prisoner in the said castle being of sound mind and memory did publish and declare the writing hereunto annexed as and for his last will and testament the same being first read to the sd Thomas in this deponent's presence and by him, the said Thomas Elston proved to be his last will and testament and that the said Thomas Elston did subscribe his name and set his seal thereto in the presence of this deponent James Kinyon and Edward Styth the subscribing witnesses thereto and that the name John Sharp subscribed thereto is this deponents own hand writing and that the said Thomas Elston departed this life about three or four days afterwards without revoking the will … 13th April 1742

 

At a consistory court held at Balla Vaghn in the parish of KK Patrick before the Reverend John Cosnahan & Edward Moore Vicars General the 8th July 1742

 

Isabella Waterson the executrix nominated in the within will of Thomas Elston declaring that there are certain goods, chattels and effects within this diocese belonging to the testator the administration of the same is committed unto her …pledges: William Curghy of Castletown and Edward Waterson of Trinity Rushen
