Archdeacon Wills 1645

Presentment dated 22 November 1645, regarding marriage of Margaret Cottier (first husband Robert Lewn deserted her) and William Cannell:

"([page] 9) KK Lonan ye 22th of November 1645: Certaine depositions xxxx before me James Moore Clarke ye day & year above sd: concerninge how many years since Robt Lewne did forsake his wife Margarett Cotter & departed out of this Island into ye kingdome of Ireland. Donold Cannell aged 26[?] years & above deposed & saith that since Robt Lewin above mentioned departed out of this Island & left his wife Margaret above written, is nine years at Lamas[?] xx xx xxxxxx ye date hereof, And further he hath deposed that the sd Robet [neither] bedded nor boarded with his sd wife Margaret Cotter during ye xxxxxxxx of 9 yeares at Lamas[?] next as above expressed. Donold Cannell his mark X. John Lewn senr xxx 40[?] years or thereabouts is deposed, saith as ye former deponent in app respects as witness his name & mark, Jo:Lewn senr his mark X. John Lewne junr aged 30 years or there abouts deposed, saith as ye former deponents. Jo:Lewne junr his mark X. And lastly Sr Patr Thompson vicar of KK Braddan acknowledged before me yt ye bands of matrimony have been asked 3 xxxxxxx Sabb: in ye Parish Church of KK Brad: xxxxxxxxxx betwixt Wm Cannell & ye sd Margarett Cotter: in regard her former husband absented himselfe from her soe longe a tyme; & also a proclamation was made ye sd Sabb: dayes yt if any man in her former husband’s behalfe not appear, to show just cause to hinder her marriage to sd Cannell, they should xxxxx xxx have legal hearing at xxxx tyme, :& xxxxx noe man appeared, or hand any thing to say against her intended marriage. X xxx Jacob:[?] Moorie[?] Mr. Vicars, I have read the within depositions, & the woman have not heard from her husband duringe the span of 7 yeares, I am of opinion shee may lawfully marry. I xxxx your very loving friend, SA Rutter, ARchn.

10 December 10: 1645. If the bands have been asked 3 times, I xxxxxx xxxxxxxxxx no lycense, nor there will I grant any in these cases. SR.
