Arbory Burials 1729-1760

The following is my reading of the actual Burial Register - I differ in some places from the transcription given by the IoMFHS (generally those names in lower case), that transcription has also retranscribed all dates in New Style which is confusing when comparing other records - the following is the sequence in the register, a few dates are no longer readable due to wear. Note that the exact form of the register is not usually given as generally stereotyped X son/daughter of Y [and Z his wife]. A few entries are difficult to interpret - in particular a (Kimin) against members of a Cubbon family (in one place the IoMFHS has rendered this as 90 min - obvious nonsense), another entry against another Cubon might just read Simon - similar bracketed entries are otherwise place names but this is not immediately recognisable as such, the nearest is Ballagarmin. A couple of entries have (Blessing) against them - this according to Kneen is Ballalyson

The 'My Comment' field is based on correlating entries with baptismal register and wills. A will or decree, besides giving additional information, usually signifies the death of an adult. Eop = end of page and is a guide to locating the entry

Arbory baptisms and burials 1730-1760 - note new-style years Jan1 to Dec 31

Baptisms considerably outnumber burials - over the 30 years there are 202 more recorded baptisms than burials though this corresponds to the census figures of 661 & 785 in 1726 and 1757. The register starts shortly after the appointment of John Quayle in July 1728 who was also vicar of Rushen from 1729 to 1739, then of Malew until death, aged 72, in 1758; Quayle would appear to have neglected the parish - Rev John Moore was appointed vicar in 1748, presumeably there were curates appointed at Arbory after Quayle's move to Malew. The hand in the register changes around May 1740 and the number of recorded baptisms also drops sharply at this time. The burial register after this period seems to comprise mainly adults who also had wills/decrees thus raising the suspicion that deaths of many children went unrecorded.
