John Gilmour

Captain Robert Anderson of the Lark of Whitehaven, was wrecked near this place, with his son William and four men on the 1st February 1791. Aged 43 years.

This stone was erected by Captn James Mun in memory of his father Captn John Mun, owner of the Sloop Peggy, of Dunbarton, who was lost in her when shipwrecked near this place on 21 Jan 1802. Aged 59 years.

Sacred to the memory of Michael Smyth, of Peel, who departed this life 29 Jan 1856, aged 62 years.

Sacred to the memory of Nash [?John & Amelia Nash 1846 + 1849]

To the memory to Thomas Cartwright, Esquire, Surgeon, nephew to Thomas Powys, Esq, of Berwick House near Shrewsbury, who departed this life on the 10 Sept 1820. In the 53 year of his age.

This stone was erected by Capt James McCavery, in memory of William Thomas, of Strangford, who perished in Peel Bay, 29 Dec 1805. Aged 25 years.

Here are interred the remains of the Revd Edmund Violet, minister of the Independent Church at St Johns Newfoundland, who perished on this coast on the 21 Dec 1810, on his passage from that Island to Liverpool. Aged 26 years.

Mr. Sam Watley[? Wattleworth], archdeacon of this [parish] and lover of his C[ountry], was interred December. Aged 72

 

Here lie the remains of Mrs. Margaret Maddrell. A native of this Island and widow of John Maddrell, of Liverpool, England. She departed this life in Peel Town on the 8 June in the year of our Lord 1784, and in the 73 year of her age. This stone was erected to her memory by Joseph Christian of London and Henry Graves of Peel Town, her executors.

Sacred to the memory of Thomas Ker, late tenant, Byres, East Lothian, who died at Peel on the 28 June 1848. Aged 50. [BR has 58]

In repairing the ruins of Peel Castle in 1871, by authority of H. B. Loch, C.B. Lieut Governor, the remains of Simon, Bishop of Sodor and Man, and the rebuilder of this Cathedral were here discovered and re-interred. He died 29 Feb 1247, in the 21 years of his Episcopagy.

[Note these Memorial Inscriptions, noted around 1922 taken by J. J. Joughin & George Clementson, predate the demolition of the church and the landscaping of the graveyard during which many MI's disappeared, with the rest being rearranged around the walls. They post date the 18th century ones noted by Feltham in God's Acre - It is this list is that referred to by J Joughin in his account of St Peter's] - these have also been transcribed by the IoMFHS - I have included their numbering here as nn:.

Sacred to the memory of Lieut James WARRING RN formerly of Witherstack in the County of Westmoreland who died at St Johns in this Parish on the 8th day of June 1832 aged 50 years He was engaged in the action of the Nile, that of Sir Robt CALDER and in the Battle of Trafalgar was serving on board the Ajax when that ship was destroyed by fire at the passage of Dardanells and was in the action of Basque Roads in 1809 and indeed was with very little exception serving throughout the whole of the long and arduous war that then convulsed Europe also Jane his daughter who died at Peel on the 31st day of October 1833 aged 2½ years.
