Cadman family

The following information is derived from IGI, census data, directory entries etc; it makes no claim to completeness.

Henry Cadman, third son of Peter Cadman cutler of Sheffield, his wife and three children came to the Island in 1843/4 from Sheffield - a Henry Cadman, Attorney of 6 Surrey St (in heart of Sheffield), is found in Pigot's 1837 directory; the family would appear to have had some money as Henry was one of the major subscribers to the IoM bank. Subsequent children are christened in Patrick where the family lived at Glenaspet, their son Henry has left an account of his early days fishing along the Neb. Sometime around 1857 Henry senior, who in various directories describes himself as 'gentleman', moved to Howstrake, Onchan, from where all his daughters were all married. He was a founder member of the Manx Society and obviously took in an interest in antiquarian matters - I have one or two books he owned and in the Manx Soc vol 15 Antiquitates Manniae he has left pencilled notes based on visits. After his death his widow is found with her son-in-law Robert Whiteside at 19 Woodbourne Square, Douglas.

His son, Peter was MHK for Glenfaba 1900-1908.

(1) Henry, the author of a book on angling is found in 1881 census at Broom Hill House, Gomersal, Yorks: Henry Cadman age 40 born Sheffield Solictor; wife Mary Ann Ashwell age 30 born Waddington Lincs Children, all born Gomersal are: Henry Aswell age 8 William Carr 6; Minnie 5; Charles Herbert 2; Edith Maud 4 months. The name 'Aswell' though sounding rather like a humorous addition should be Ashwell (thanks to a family descendant for enlightening me).

(2)Charles married Georgina, daughter of William Harrison on 6th August 1872 (Kirk German) - however by 1881 census he is shown as a Consulting Engineer 31 Jermyn Street, Toxteth park, Liverpool - Charles W Cadman 38 born Sheffield, wife Charlotte S. age 39 born London (+ servant Manx-born Matilda Jewel 24), no children are shown - thus it would appear Georgina had died and he had remarried. There may have been a child as an Alice B Cadman, b 1875 in England, is shown staying with aunt Mary Grace Whiteside in 1881 census.
