[From Manx Families, A.W.Moore, MS 1889]

Goldie-Taubman’s of the Nunnery

The name Tunman or Tubman, which ultimately became Taubman, is found in the Insular records at an early date. The name is certainly not of Manx or even Celtic, but probably of Dutch origin. The family with which we have to do held property at ‘the Green’ near Castletown, early in the 17th century as per record. Its first member to hold any public position was Silvester Tubman, who was an MHK in 1629. He had issue John and Ann. John, who was also an HK, married Ellin … and had issue, according to the Malew Register (which beginning in 1649 is of considerable use to us), (1) Kathrin (bapt September 12, 1652), (2) Mary (bapt May 11, 1656), (3) John (bapt April 10, 1658, (4) Thomas (bapt May 21, 1660), (5) Elizabeth married Silvester Huddlestone January 9th, 1693. The name is spelled Tunman in the Register at this date and John is designated as ‘Jo. of ye Greene.’ He was buried at Malew on the 17th of January 1689, and his sister Ann was buried there on the 4th of February in the same year. The eldest son, John,1 was entered for ‘the Green’ in 1689. He died sans progeny in 1704, when his brother Thomas was entered for it. Thomas married in 1693 Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Norris,2 Controller, a very influential family in the Island at that date. They had issue John (bapt September 17, 1694) and Thomas. It would appear from the Malew Register that both John and Thomas were baptized on the 13th of March 1703. John married Margaret daughter and heiress of Captain Nicholas Christian of Ballure. He was entered for that property in 1741. It would appear from the Records that he sold ‘The Bowling Green’ in 1727 to Captain Thomas Fitzgerald, but that on Capt. F’s death in 1737, he bought it back again from his widow. He was for many years an HK and in 1747, he became Deemster, which office he held till his death in 1763. He was buried at Malew on the 2nd of October of that year. His wife was buried there on the 2nd of February 1766. They had issue John (born 1723, died 1799; SHK) and Thomas (born 1725). Thomas married Elizabeth Stevenson alias Huddlestone alias Calcot and had issue Thomas (obit young, buried at Malew). John,3 who was an HK, married Esther,4 daughter of Deemster Nicholas Christian of Ballastole, Maughold (a distant connection of the Milntown Christians) and had issue John (see below), Nicholas (buried April 13, 1777, at Malew) and Margaret (obit 1778, buried at Malew) who married John Christian of Milntown and had issue John (born 1776), Christian and others.5 John Taubman, who had served in the regular Army and was Major in the Manx Fencibles, purchased the Nunnery,6 near Douglas, from Deemster Peter Heywood. He married Dorothy Christian 5th daughter of John Christian of Milntown and Ewanrigg. (She was born 1757, married 1774 n1, and died 1784). It is through this connection that the Taubman’s trace descent from Edward the 1st, King of England (see Addendum #1) John, who was for many years Speaker of the House of Keys, died in 1822, leaving issue (1) John, a colonel in the 66th and 110th Regiments, and after he retired, commander of the South Manx Volunteers. He married Eliza Haren, of Foot’s Cray, Kent, and died sans progeny in 1812; (2) Margaret Christian (died 1838) married in 1811 Col John James, of Pantairou[sp] County Pembroke, and had issue; (3) Isabella Christian, the heiress (see below); (4) Dorothy married 18th July 1813 (1st) Col Wilks, Governor of St Helena, who lived at Kirby, (2nd) William Blamire of Cumberland. She died sans progeny in 1857. Isabella Christian (died 1824) married General Alexander John Goldie in 1804. He was son of Lt General Sir George Goldie, KCB. He was Speaker of the House of Keys.
