The Tourist Trophy was inaugurated in 1905, when the first race was run in the Isle of Man on a course of nearly 52 miles, of four circuits, on a petrol allowance of 221 miles to the allon. The winning car was a 18 hp. Arrol-Johnston riven by its designer, J. S. Napier, averaging- nearly 33.96 m.p.h. In 1906 the Rolls-Royce, driven by the Hon. C. S. Rolls, was an easy winner at a speed of 39.3 m.p.h.
