Descendants of Stephen Thomas Kaneen

1. STEPHEN THOMAS KANEEN was born Abt. 1800 in Lazere Parish, Isle of Mann, and died Abt. 1840 in Black Rock NY. He married ANNE CHRISTIAN.

Notes:

From Gloria Caneen, from her research as of 4/2/98

In (Isle of Man) Kynne is seen in 1422: Keneen in 1666, Caneen in 1729; Kaneen in 1740.

According to Moore (see www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/contrib/manx/familyhist/index.htm) a purely Manx name.

I was surprised to see that the spelling was Caneen in 1729 because the family lore is that Thomas and William (sons of Stephen and Ann) were hired out as bond servants to a Mr. Francher in Leon, NY. He didn't know how to spell the name, hence he spelled it with a "C". In any case Stephens name is definitely spelled with a "K" on the records in the Douglas IOM library.

There is also a story that Thomas was mistreated by Mr. Francher so he ran away, However he was caught and beaten. He then said to Francher, "Someday I will be where you are and you'll be where I am!" He did end up owning the Francher farm.

I'm also confused by Moore saying that Kaneen is purely a Manx name as I was told by a Kaneen widow in IOM that there were two brothers who originally emigrated from Ireland.

Came to Black Rock, NY near Buffalo in 1824
