CALLOW Balldromma-Beg, Maughold

CALLOW, Balldromma-beg, Maughold.

I am researching CALLOW’s of Kirk Maughold, Isle of Man, and have built up a large computer database of CALLOW’s and their connections. My particular interest is CALLOW Balldromma-beg, who derive from a Daniel COLLOW (sic) and Isabel KENDRY (sic) and their illegitimate son Simon CALLOW (christened KENDRY - 31 Oct 1736) and were based at “Billy Simon’s” a 10 acre croft above Port Mooar, near Maughold Village, and Jalloo. Tree Published: IOMFHS "Frauehyn as Banglaneyn" Vol. XX No.2, May 1998, Pgs 65-68.

Origins

I have been unable to trace the line further back, although Daniel is likely to be the Daniel, christened 1717, son of William CALLOW. According to the list of Maughold landowners in 1703 there were several William CALLOWs in existence about this time including William CALLOW (Claughbane), William CALLOW (Ballagilley), William CALLOW (Crowcreen), William CALLOW (Ballaskeig), William CALLOW James (Balldromma), and William CALLOW (Ballafayle/Booilevelt) sumner. First generations of CALLOW Ballafayle were entered on the Manorial Roll as Aleyn McCALO (1511), John McALO (1567-1593), William CALOW (1597-1610) and Robert CALLOW (1616-1662).

Connections .

My Balldromma-beg branch of the CALLOWs has connections to COWIN, LEECE (Kirk German), KERRUISH (Ballafayle, Maughold), FAYLE, QUIRK (Marown), CORKILL, CORLETT, JOUGHIN, BANNAN, CORTEEN, MARSDEN and KINRADE.

Other CALLOWs

In order to successfully trace this line I have had to eliminate other CALLOW lines, and so I also have information on other CALLOW families based in Maughold. Namely: CALLOW Ballaterson, CALLOW Cardle Veg, CALLOW Dhullan, CALLOW Ballagilley, CALLOW Crow Creen, CALLOW Ballafayle, CALLOW Ballaglass, CALLOW Claughbane, CALLOW Ballaskeig and CALLOW Ballacreggan.

Resources

Amongst resources available to me I have the IOM I.G.I., Maughold Burial Registers and Monumental Inscriptions, Feltham’s 1797 Monumental Inscriptions for Maughold, Callow baptisms at Maughold 1648-1848 (courtesy of Tom Corteen), and Maughold Census Data 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 (also from Tom Corteen). I am happy to put these resources to use for other researchers on request.
