Looking for the William Gelling bap 20 April 1772, parents John Gelling and Mgt Quilliam. We know that he had a daughter Esther who was under 20 in 1822 ( from Mgt Quilliam's will.) and that his youngest child was born in 1810.
There were 2 Wm Gellings born in Braddan in 1772. The other was to parents Thos Gelling and Ann Shimmin.
Searching through the burial index for a William Gelling b 1772 who died after 1809, the only one which fits is this one (unfortunately, no matching will ):
GELLING, William 79 Bra 3 Mar 1853
These are the oldest William Gellings in the 1841 and 1851 census indexes:
1841
GELLING William 65 Dou 1465/4 16 26
GELLING William 60 Dou 1465/5 18 32
The 65 year old turns out to be a Widow Gelling --- female.
*********************************
1851
GELLING William 78 Dou 2525 184 233
GELLING William 56 Onc 2525 27 16
****************************************
The 60 year old in 1841 was a tailor and he didn't have a wife listed with him. The 78 year old in 1851 was also a tailor, and he had a wife named Catherine, age 70.
This tailor is likely to be the 79 year old who was buried in 1853.
Does anyone know if this is the Wm Gelling who married Margaret Kneen ? Or does anyone recognise him as being a completely different Wm Gelling ?
There's a 26 Oct 1841 Braddan marriage of a Wm Gelling to a Catherine Kewley in the IGI. No other marriages to a Catherine between the 41 and 51 censuses.
A possible burial for Cath Gelling who claimed to be 70 in 1851:
GELLING, Catherine 86 Bra 11 Mar 1858
So please, Donna, will you see if there are MIs for Catherine in 1858, and for William in 1853.
GELLING, William 79 Bra 3 Mar 1853
I'm hoping that the burial plots might be near #258 (which you gave me earlier in this thread for Thomas Gelling 1869 and Elizabeth 1874) and that William's stone (if there is one) might mention Margaret nee Kneen.
