John Callow 1763-1833

The following relates to long standing debate amongst Australian & American researchers about who were the parents of John Callow (died 9 Feb 1833 aged 70; buried Bride grave #111) & if he was descendant of Wiliam the Quaker.

Thanks to the manx message board espec Liz, Donna, Frances, George, Noel & after extensive research into Bride, Andreas & Lezayre Parish records researcher Cheryl Benson & I have concluded the above John Callow (husb of Catherine Cormode c 1774-1854) is most likely the son of Daniel Callow & 'Joney'/Mary Camaish, rather than as previously thought, William Callow & Jane Christian.

Reasons in summary;
John born to Daniel Callow & 'Joney' Camaish, Lezayre, bapt 24 Sept 1763, is the only one with the correct age eg 70 to match MI for our John Callow's Bride burial in 1833;

c1763/4 coincides with a smallpox outbreak so the family may have moved back to Bride & had subsequent chidn in Bride where Daniel & Mary were married (14 Dec 1762)-other chn-Margaret 1766 (married William Radcliffe), Thomas 1769 (not mentioned in either wills) & Mary bapt Jan 1771 (exec of both parents' wills).

The wills of Daniel (d 1812) & Mary Callow (d 1805) both mention a son John, daughters Margaret (Radcliffe) & Mary (in Daniel's case Margaret's son John Radcliffe too).

John, Catherine, their son Thomas Callow & his wife Jane alias Cowley are buried next to Daniel & his dau Mary Crennil(Crenilt) alias Callow-Bride grave # 110;

Mary Crinnel/Callow (married John Crenilt, Bride June 1800) is in the same household on the 1841 & 1851 census as John & Catherine's u/m children Daniel & Jane, in the 1851 census described as 'aunt' & u/m which can mean widowed;

Cheryl & I have looked at evidence of interconnections-wills for John's parents; a headstone with John's age; a will (for John Callow) mentioning his wife Catherine & children; Bride marriage records for John & Catherine, Daniel & Mary; john's wife Catherine & his 'sibling' Mary in the same household as his children & the adjacent headstones.

The question of John's relationship to Wiliam the Quaker has not been established, as no further primary research has been undertaken at this stage.

Happy to post transcribed wills where they will be most useful & give more research details to interested people.
