Hi Richard, I'm not sure whether we are talking about the same TEARE/TEAR family. However, I'm trying to work back from Thomas TEAR/E (1825-1899) who married Jane STEVENSON (1831-1866). I believe that they left the Isle of Man and came out to South Australia around 1850. Does this sound likely to you...??
