Re: CALLOWS
In Response To: Re: CALLOWS ()

Hi Wendy

I found some more census entries of your talented artistic Callow ancestors. I was hoping to find John Callow b circa 1798 with his wife Elizabeth (nee ?) and their children, Benjamin b 1821, James b 1824 and George Dodgson b 1829---all together in 1841. However, I suspect that Elizabeth had died, and I can't find the 2 daughters or Charles Robert b 1831.

I think that this is John's brother, Robert b circa 1802 ( the one who's living with John in 1851, both born IOM.)

Margaret 15 N

Ellen 4 Y
Robt Callow (indexed Collon) 40 shoe m N

Then I suspect that this is John with sons George and James. Gilder's apprentice sound appropriate, and it turns out that he, too, becomes an artist.

James 15 gilder's apprentice Y

I don't know if this could be Benjamin b 1821 in 1841. I have a strong suspicion that it is ( as I said before, there were very few Benjamin Callows) If it is, the brother John doesn't show up in the IGI, but it seems likely that John and Elizabeth would have named one of their sons after John.

I don't know about James in 1851, but by 1861 he's in London, and I think that his wife, Ellen is back in Liverpool:

I found this mention of James on a website:

****************************************************

George Dobson (sic) Callow was Londoner who painted landscapes and marine paintings in both oil and watercolour. He particularly enjoyed painting river and coastal scenes. He exhibited 2 pictures at the Royal Academy, but he also exhibited between 1858 and 1873.

The marine painter James W Callow seems to have been his brother.

He is known to have lived at 83 Newman Street, London.

The following is from another site:

Callow, George D (fl 1858-73). London painter of coastal & river scenes. Exhibited at the RA, RBA & RI.

Callow, James W. (fl. 1860). London painter. Exhibited one picture ‘The East Scar & Bay, Whitby’ at the Rain 1860.

Callow, John OWS (1822-78). Marine & landscape painter & teacher in oil & watercolour. Pupil of elder brother William. Lived in Paris to 1844. Appointed Professor of Drawing in the Royal Military Academy at Addiscombe in 1855, and Sub-Professor of Drawing at Woolwich in 1861. Excelled in marine painting. Exhibited annually at the OWS (352 works) & at the RA, BI, RBA & NWS.

Callow, William (1812-1908). Landscape, architectural and marine painter. Taught in Paris & appointed drawing master to the family of Louis Philippe. Exhibited RWS.

John Callow and William Callow weren't connected to your Callows as far as I can tell.

Are you getting used to the idea of having found such fascinating ancestors ?
