Clegg/Clague and the dissappearing John

Hi everyone, I’ve been researching my family tree and traced part of it back towards the Isle of Man which is where it starts to get a little hazy, I thought I’d ask on here for your fresh eyes and in case you guys know something I don’t (?). Basically, I’m trying to find a man called John Clague who in the 1881 census was boarding with the Huddart family in Arlecdon Cumbria and was an iron miner. From looking at later census records, he had a child (John in 1884ish) with one of the daughters of the family he was boarding with (Mary Huddart) and then married her in 1887 and remained in Cumbria for the rest of his life. From the census information he was born on the Isle of man around 1861 (his marriage certificate suggests he was born 1859), in the 1881 census his surname is spelt Clague, later census’s and his wedding certificate have it spelt Clegg. Am I right to assume Clegg is the anglicised version of the manx Clague??. I have a copy of his marriage certificate which says that his father was Thomas Clegg, also an Iron worker, and that he was deceased at the time of the wedding (26th July 1887). From looking at census records on the Isle of Man in 1871 I’m having trouble finding him I only had two hits (John H Clague and John E Clague) however the birth years were off by a quite a few years and also I found them both still on the Isle of Man in 1881 census with their respective families. Looking at the 1861 census there were a few more hits but again the birth years are a little out as is the fathers occupation. Has anyone got any ideas about where I could go from here or things I could try to maybe narrow the search a bit? All help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
Helen
