Comptroller Tyldesley 1660s

Hi,

I have been trying to unravel the Tyldesley family in the 1600s. A W Moore and J A Brew both produced trees, but these are completely incompatible, and I fear that both contain significant errors.

According to AWM, Comptroller Richard Tyldesley was born c 1600, entered Balladoole in 1643, and was made Comptroller in that year, and died in 1686. JAB agrees to the basic dates, c1600 –1686, BUT the Malew register records that Comptroller Tyldesley was buried in the chancel of KK Arbory on 2 Oct 1675, so both dates of death seem to be out.

“The Lordship of the IOM Under the Stanleys” says that John Sharples was Comptroller to 1652, and that Tyldesley took over in 1652. The book suggests that RT ceased being comptroller in 1673 but that Thomas Norrris did not become Comptroller untul 1676, dying in 1686. This leaves a two year gap. It is my believ that RT was Comptroller from 1652 to 1675, with Norris taking over after his death, but doea anyone have any comments.

AWM says Comptroller Tyldesley married Isabella Norris, and refers to a son, Thurstan becomng MHK and succeeded to the Friary, followed by Thurstan's son William and William's son Richard born 1701. AWM gives no dates for these children.

J A Brew says a quite different tree, giving no known wife for Comptroller T, but saying that his son WIlliam succeeded to the Friary, and that he also had children Thurstan, Richard, Katherine. BREW says it was this Richard, who married Isabella Norris. The Parish Register gives the following children for a Richard T and Isabella Norris, viz

Thomas 17-Aug 1658 23 Aug 1658
Thurstan 01 Aug 1659 10 Aug 1659
Elizabeth -- July 1661 06 Aug 1661
William, ----- 01 Oct 1663
Henry 22 Jan 1665 17 Feb 1665
(unknown son 07 Jan 1666 14 Jan 1666

Isabella died in 1668, leaving a will, which read

“Issable Tyldesley als Norris, died intestate 25 Sept 1668: "Arbory: Mrs. Issable Norris alias Tyldesley departed ye --------- about September the 25, 1668 whereof the Church having intelligence have decreed her seaven children unmarryed vizt: RICHARD, ISSABLE, MARY, THURSTAN, ELIZABETH, WILLM & HENRY TYLDSLEY administrators whereof RICHARD, ISSABLE & MARY are at lawful yeeres & are to be sworn supervisors of ye children under years.

This offers 3 more children, Richard, Issable and Mary, all of whom wee at least 14 by 1668, so born before 1654. As parish records only start in the early 1650s,.it may be that these three children predated the register.

Brew suggests that Richard the Younger was born c 164o, but if he married Issabella Norris and had children who were 14 by 1668, that is impossible. He would have had to have been born by 1633 at latest, married say 1653, and had 2 kids before 1658.

I believe that Brew’s line, Comptroller Richard c1600- 1675; Son WIlliam of c1630, (with brother Ruchard born by 1634 who married Isabella Norris) seems more likely that Comptroller T marrying Isabell N late in life. Does anyone have firm evidence as to which is correct.

Brew says that William of 1630 who inherited the Friary died in 1726, and was succeeded by his son, also William of 1660-1726. The double Williams seem reasonable but the 1726 date seems suspect to me. A WM Tyldesley o the Friary died in 1722, which clearly relates to one of these two Williams.

Does anyone have any firm data on this troubled period ?
