Re: Peter Stanley Gelling, Archaeologist

Rosemary
Someone recently enquired on this noticeboard about the links of your family with Kerrooglass and Skerrisdale. I acquired the following information years ago and it might be of interest.

The link between the farms is due to the first marriage of William Cain of Skerrisdale in the parish of German who was married first on 20 February 1851 to Ann Cannell of German. Ann was baptised 1823 and was the daughter of John Cannell of Peel (otherwise Kerroo Glass) and Ann Kelly of Kirk Patrick.
William and Ann had issue William, Joseph, John James Cain, bap. 28 Aug 1853 German.

I don't have Ann junior's death, but her father was generous to his (widowed?) son in law in his 1855 will.

On 11th December 1856 William Cain re-married to Mary Jane Quirk of the Glenneedle family (her sister Margaret was said to have married William's wealthy Californian brother John Cain) and Robert Charles Cain their eldest child was baptised 20th Dec 1857

In April 1859 the passing of the ownership of Skerrisdale from John Cannell to William Cain was recorded, being "by virtue of a deed of settlement dated 8th February 1851." There is a strong possibility William may have paid off mortgages standing against the property.

I have not researched the later history, or how both farms were left or sold to the descendants of the second venture, but this could have ocurred for many reasons.
Perhaps, Rosemary, you know what became of the older half-brothers of your famous forebear, R.C. Cain?
