Re: James Brown of Bride 1822
In Response To: Re: James Brown of Bride 1822 ()

Hi,

Loughan y Yeigh

THis sounds VERY interesting indeed. I did not mention Loughan y Yeigh, as the exact family connection with the house has so far eluded me. The house was demolished in the 1970s, and was by then ruinous, the last occupant bring Jimmy Brown, who was probably in his 70s or 80s by then at a guess. He was a distant cousin, but I do not know the precise relationship, and he was a batchelor. Some time between 1880 and 1900, the Brown family did farm Loughan y Yeigh, and it may even be that James Mearns Brown was there.

My mother recalled a photograph of a family group at the porch of Loughan y Yeigh, but sadly it has vanished at some stage.

If this is the case, I am a bit puzzled how the house entered the Brown family. You say that John Corlett, 1762-1834 had one son and four daughters. From the dates you give, Elizabeth seems to be the oldest daughter, but if the father died in 1834, who would have inherited the house ? Eliza married William Christian on 18 Nov 1827. and "one year" trial marriages were common in Bride in those days and they were definitely together well before that.
The 1851 census, as corrected by Brian Lawson shows the family, inc WIlliam and Eliza and it also shows Isabella, aged 23, which would equate to 1828, BUT the census ages were notoriously inaccurate and a christening date of 16 Dec 1826 seems to be the correct one. The family group aslo includes two sons, William and Thomas, seemingly christened 17 Nov 1821.

Now what is VERY interesting is that their daughter, Isabella who was chrsitened on 16 Dec 1826 ,ie almost a year before the parents married, was christened as Isabella Cowell or Corlett per the register. As Cowll or Xtian were sometimes treated as interchangeable in Bride, I had assumed that Cowell or Corlett were also regarded as alternatives, but in light of what you say, maybe it is as follows.

If Eliza was born a Corlett, and married a Cowle, who died, and she then had a child by a Christian, if the father's name was not used in the parish register, would it make sense to use her maiden name and married name ?

Does this seem to make sense to you ? If this is correct, the Eliza and William must have been together by Feb 1821 at latest. Does this make sense for the short marriage to Thos Cowle of Bride ?
