To add a bit more, indentures implied two or three contracting parties, each with obligations under the contract. Up until the 20th century many Manx sales of land were by "deed poll" i.e. a document with a flat head (no indents!) and simply said that A had recieved a sum of money from B and in return sold their parcel of land. A deed poll now is in common speech reserved for changing your name - a one sided declaration.
Leases were never by deed poll because both parties have continuing obligations.
