Thanks, I did have some of this information but wasn't sure if this was him.

Yes, his marriage cert does list Robert as his father.
I have since found a Robert on the 1871 census, as a mariner aboard 36 Maggie in German, who is 25 and married.
There is also a Robert aged 40 aboard 105 Persia, Marown but it doesn,t specify whether he is married (Genealogist)
