Re: Skillicorn
In Response To: Skillicorn ()

Before I comment on your specific query, can you provide any additional information about the cousins who married at the Dhoon?

In regard to Joseph Skillicorn, born 1900, you will need to obtain documents, going backward in time, to verify the names and dates. Start with the death cert for Joseph in Ramsey 1976, then Joseph in Liverpool, 1953, etc.

There are some clues to help you find the documentation:

There is a family tree on Ancestry.com for Joseph Leeson Skillicorn, born 1900 Toxeth Park. The line going backward is as follows:

Joseph - Mary Ann Leeson

Arthur -- Rose Couch married Liverpool, March 1859

Joseph -- Catherine Clague

John -- Jane Quark.

Perhaps you can contact the submitter of this tree.

(I am in disagreement about the Joseph who married Catherine Clague being the son of John Skillicorn and Jane Quark.)

In addition, I have some information on the family of Joseph (who I think is the son of Philip Skillicorn/Judith Killey) and Catherine Clague which I have posted below.

Joseph Skillicorn is probably the son of Philip, baptized at Lonan, August 26, 1796, and probably the Joseph Skillicorn of Braddan, who married, at Maughold, September 13, 1825, Catherine Clague, daughter of Thomas and Eleanor Clague. He died at Ramsey, August 13, 1835, aged 42, and was buried at Lonan. Catherine Clague was baptized in Ramsey, July 26, 1803.

Joseph Skillicorn and his wife Catherine “of the town of Ramsey” were petitioners to settle the estate of Catherine’s mother, Elleanor Clague, widow of Thomas Clague. Unfortunately, Joseph died before the estate settlement was complete.

On August 24, 1835, Catherine, widow of Joseph Skillicorn, deceased, and Thomas Skillicorn, Joseph’s “next of kin” petitioned the court for settlement of Joseph’s estate, stating that Joseph had died intestate on August 13, of that year, leaving “four infant children”. Also mentioned in the petition are Joseph’s brothers, Charles, tailor of Lonan; and James, schoolmaster in Lonan. Catherine Skillicorn, with the consent of Joseph’s brothers, is sworn guardian and supervisor of her children, and administrator of the estate.

All of the personal effects of the house, and of Joseph’s bakery business were sold at auction. This must have been a difficult time for the widow Catherine, who, with four young children to raise, has everything in her home sold, to settle her husband’s estate. The children appear to have been separated.

Catherine may be the Catherine Skillicorn, 34, in the 1841 census, a servant in the home of Quarton (?) Walker in Lezayre.

1841 (June 6-7) census Lezayre (Kinrade Cottage, p. 3): Quarton Walker 35; Jane 37; George 5; Hannah 2m; Catherine Skillicorn 34, f. s.; Charlotte Emmet 14, f. s. FHL film 0464356.

James Skillicorn is mentioned as guardian of Jos. Skillicorn, in 1837.
