Re: Michael Flax Mill
In Response To: Re: Michael Flax Mill ()

Veronica Sampson's baptism in Kirk Michael is simply recorded like this:

1769 Veronica dau of Ja: Sampson & Jane Moreton Feb 26.

There is an interesting description of scutching on the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum website at:

www.uftm.org.uk/collections_and_research/folk_collections/rural_buildings/gorticashel_flax-scutching_mill/

where it mentions the retted flax being "passsed through cogged rollers", stems being "guided into the path of the spinning scutching blades" and that "working in a scutch mill was a highly dangerous occupation. The workers were at risk from machinery that could not be stopped quickly in an emergency".

The article also confirms that, in Ulster at least, scutching was an autumnal activity.
