Re: Elinor "Nell" Daly
In Response To: Elinor "Nell" Daly ()

You are quite right the Manx Government rented Bemahague, Onchan from the Daly family for many years until finally acquiring it from J.J.H.Daly in 1903. Elinor Heywood was married to John Hickman Daly of Carrickfergus, NI., and died in 1861. Government house was originally a farm, the property passed from the Christian family to the Heywoods by sale for £1000 in 1789. Prior to this the family owned the Nunnery, another large estate on the other side of Douglas.
The family held the manor of Heywood, Lancs & the first to come over here was Robert Heywood(1634-1691) Governor of the Island. His son married Leonora Cannell, heiress of the Calcott & Cannell properties. Elinor Heywood's grandmother was a Joyner and belonged to one of the the earliest recorded families to live and trade from Douglas (C1490).
